Travel insurance: is your credit card cover enough?

Many credit cards bundle travel protection, so before a trip a common question is: do I still need separate travel insurance? The answer depends on what you booked, where you are going, and the small print of the card benefit.

Three kinds of cover

The limits of card-linked cover

Card travel benefits normally come with conditions: you must pay for all or a set share of the trip with that card, the cover applies to the cardholder and certain travelling family members, and the limits are often lower than standalone insurance. Card benefits are also frequently "secondary", meaning you claim on other insurance first and the card covers the remainder.

Details worth comparing

When separate insurance is worth it

If the trip is expensive, the destination has costly healthcare (the US, Europe and Japan, for example), or you are travelling with elderly relatives or young children, standalone travel insurance is usually worthwhile. For a short, low-cost trip, check whether the card benefit already covers you.

This is comparison guidance, not insurance advice. Cover, exclusions and claims follow the policy wording.
