The fees behind "interest-free" instalments

Card instalment promotions often lead with "0% interest" while charging a one-off handling fee. The fee looks small — a few percent — but once it is annualised into an APR it is usually higher than people expect.

Why "0% interest" still costs money

Say you repay over 12 months with a 3% handling fee deducted from the principal up front. You actually receive the principal minus the fee, yet you still repay the full principal each month, so the true cost of the money is higher than "3%". The shorter the term, the higher the annualised rate.

What APR means

The annualised percentage rate folds interest and every unavoidable fee (including the handling fee and annual fee) into a single annual figure, making it the fairest way to compare instalment plans and loans. Banks in Hong Kong are required to disclose the APR when advertising loan products, so it is usually in the terms.

Questions to ask when comparing

When an instalment makes sense

If a merchant offers a genuinely fee-free, interest-free plan and you could afford to pay in full anyway, an instalment preserves your cash flow. If you are choosing it because you cannot pay, compare a personal loan’s APR first — card instalments are often not cheap once the fee is annualised.

This explains the concepts; it is not borrowing advice. Actual fees and APRs follow the bank’s and merchant’s terms, and you should borrow only what you can repay.
