Cashback or miles? How to choose a Hong Kong card

Cashback and miles are the two most common credit-card rewards in Hong Kong. Many people assume miles are automatically better, but which one wins depends on how you spend and how you redeem — not on the card itself.

The fundamental difference

Cashback comes back as money (or as a bill credit), so its value is stable and there is almost no redemption effort. Miles must be accumulated to a threshold before you can trade them for flights, cabin upgrades or hotels, and their value swings widely depending on what you redeem.

How to work out the "real value"

Rather than comparing miles with dollars, convert both to cash. Take a flight you would genuinely book, see how many miles it costs, and compare that with the ticket's cash price to estimate what one mile is worth to you. Multiply that by the miles you earn in a month to get your real monthly value.

Then subtract the costs: some miles cards charge an annual fee, and overseas spending often carries a foreign-currency fee. If you only earn a few thousand miles a year, the annual fee can eat most of the return.

Who miles suit

Who cashback suits

A mixed strategy

Many households run two cards: a cashback card for groceries and bills, and a miles card for flights, hotels and overseas spending where online-travel bonuses apply. The trick is to use each card only where its rate is highest — and never to spend just to earn miles.

This guide explains how to compare, not what to buy. Actual rates, caps and terms are set by the banks; always read them before applying.
